A tiny country packed to the brim with charm

Montenegro — The Basics

A Balkan beauty at the edge of the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is one of those places that just does not get enough credit. It’s a shame! Not only is Montenegro rich in history, natural beauty, nightlife, and city attractions, but it’s also great for cheap traveling! With a little informed travel advice, explorers and adventurers can get ready and draft up their Montenegro travel itinerary!

Sights and Attractions

What European destination would be complete without a beautiful cathedral or two? Visitors won’t be disappointed when they come to witness the grandiosity of the  Kotor Cathedral . Two tall towers dominate the surrounding landscape. Inside, travelers will find a number of centuries-old relics and religious icons!

Montenegro is widely known for its impressive beaches and coastal towns. Established over a millennium ago, the town of  Budva   is a stunning sight that cannot be passed by. A multitude of old- fashioned red-roofed structures lies in stark contrast to the deep blue Adriatic Sea. No trip to Montenegro is complete without visiting this impressive little town. Known as the nightlife capital of the Adriatic, there is no shortage of merriment in Budva when the sun goes down!

A host of clubs and bars can be found throughout the town, quenching visitors’ thirst and guaranteeing a night to remember! There’s a good chance you’ll be hungover in the morning. What better way to rally and refresh than to take a quick dip in the lovely Adriatic! A little sunbathing on the beach is just the ticket to get over the old hair of the dog!

Montenegro is more than just beaches and nightlife. Chill out and take a relaxing walk through one of Montenegro’s lush green forests.  Biogradska Gora   is one of the oldest forests in Europe, remaining relatively untouched by man for its entire existence! Mountain climbing, berry picking, trail hiking, and canoeing are popular activities in this untouched paradise that predates humanity!

For shredders and skiers,  Kolasin 1450   is the premier ski resort of the Balkans. Featuring a wide range of slopes for a variety of skill sets, Kolasin 1450 is a worldwide attraction for lovers of snow sports and recreation!

About halfway up Mt. Durmitor,  Black Lake   is a charming glacial lake with a sandy shore and a view that will amaze. For weary hikers, a small restaurant is located nearby. Refuel, take in the sights, and carry on in your journey to the peak!

Montenegro Travel Tips

Montenegro Currency Considerations

Montenegro uses the Euro. This is great for those who plan to visit other European countries on their trip. It may be tempting just to wait until you’re off the plane to  exchange your currency    for Euros.

Don’t! You’re bound to get a terrible rate. Although Montenegro is excellent for cheap traveling, you don’t want to throw your money away on a terrible exchange rate. The extra euros that you’ll get from a better rate will take you a long way in Montenegro! Budget ahead of time, and figure out how many Euros you’ll realistically need for your trip. A currency exchange site is a reliable option for a fantastic exchange rate. You don’t want to run out of Euros in Montenegro, lest you have to use an expensive kiosk or get a bad rate in a tourist hotspot!

A good piece of travel advice anywhere on the planet: watch your money! Montenegro is a safe place, and the people are honest, but there’s a bad apple in every bushel. Keep your wallet in your front pocket to make it harder for pickpocketers to snatch. No trip to Montenegro would be complete without a day at the beach! When bringing persona belongings to the beach, try to find a local locker to store your things. You don’t want any land crabs to side-step away with your purse! Don’t leave one of the best places to travel with an empty wallet and missing valuables!

Lodging

You will have no problem finding a hotel, hostel, or homestay in Montenegro. Cheap traveling is easy in Montenegro! It’s one of the best places to travel for those who want to see something new without having to save up all year for it!

Flights and Transportation

Flights will land in either Tivat Airport or Podgorica Airport. Most cities have an effective bus network. The rail system will take travelers to some important cities, though it is not very extensive. Taxis can be way overpriced, so if it’s not extraordinarily far, you’re better off hoofing it.

Language

In Montenegro, Montenegrin is the primary language. Montenegrin is almost 100 percent mutually intelligible with Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian. Make sure that the translation app on your phone is up to date, as much of the population of Montenegro does not speak English.

A few phrases in Montenegrin can be a lifesaver. Numbers, time of day, and things relating to beds and room service are very useful in Montenegro.

Sometimes, tourists can be very impatient with locals who don’t speak English. English is a difficult language to learn, and the world does not revolve around English speakers and Anglophone culture. Be patient with anyone when there is a language barrier. As a guest in this beautiful country, it is vital to treat the locals with dignity and respect. Montenegrins are very warm and friendly to foreigners, so try to reciprocate.

Montenegro Travel Etiquette

Journeying through the Baltic states, there are many sensitive issues that travelers should be aware of. Don’t call Montenegro “Yugoslavia” or “Serbia.” While Montenegro and Serbia generally have good relations, Montenegro has their own cultural identity and would like to be recognized as Montenegrin. Any conversation about Yugoslavia eventually leads to a conversation about Yugoslavia’s demise.

Many grisly, unspeakable horrors occurred in the Yugoslav wars during and after its dissolution. Slaughters, abuses, and war crimes were committed all throughout these wars, and many still live with these harsh memories. Taking any side regarding the conflict is a bad idea. It’s best just to avoid talking about it.

While Montenegrins are speakers of a Slavic language, they are not Russian. Although they were part of a socialist state, they were never a member of the Soviet Union. A suspected pro-Russian coup has been attempted very recently. Try not to mention Russia too much, as Montenegrins by and large are not very excited about Russia.

If you have sensitive lungs, don’t forget to pack your inhaler. Many Montenegrins smoke, and they do it everywhere.
When visiting someone’s home, make sure to take your shoes off! This custom is observed in many Balkan countries, and Montenegro is no different! Make sure your socks are presentable since they’ll be seeing them.

Montenegro was occupied by the Nazis during world war two. Avoid discussions on this topic.
